Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT model has been developed as a race only vehicle from the Murcielago line and it was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. It was designed in the collaboration with the engineers from the Lamborghini factory, Audi sports, a division of Audi and Reiter engineering. To comply with the JAF, ACO and FIA rules it rear-wheel drive had to be modified and it is different from the regular Murcielago models. The engine is airflow restricted 5999 cc, type 535 V12 6 liter, with the power of 580 bhp at 6100 rpm.
The top speed of Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT is highly dependant on the gearing that is selected for the particular racetrack. Since its introduction several models have been designed and have competed at the race tracks of Asia, Europe and North America however the results were not good as the participants in the races usually did not make it to the last round.
Hence seven new models have been designed since its original introduction in 2003.
The full power of Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT was not seen until the race in Monza at 2005. however even in this particular race this model did not make it to the final round. In 2006. the engineers from the Reiter engineering factory have adapted the model with the new rear wing (with the purpose of less drag) and a redesigned body work. In March of 2007. Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT secured its first win in the GT Championship at the FIA GT Championship at China Ground.
